  1. Your Mother

From the recording DEMO RECORDINGS

Written for Mother's Day, this song was first performed publicly at a Paint Creek Folklore Society meeting on December 2, 2006, and is now available as a lo-fi demo. (Technical difficulties prevented the recording and upload of a studio version at this time.)

Lyrics

Little girl, I've been married to your mother for going on seven years.
And I know there never could have been another.
It's because of her, I know, I'm still here.
I wouldn't know what to do on rainy days
or even the sunny ones too.
I might have sunken down deep in my lazy ways--
God only knows what I might have come to.
Little girl, I am speaking of your mother.
I hope you listen, for what I say to you is true.

Little girl, the Lord has given you your mother.
Sometimes it's hard, I know, when you can't get your way.
You might feel down, all bound up, and smothered
You might feel she's ruined your whole day.
But you're still young and someday you will come to know my gratitude
for how she reads to you, keeps you close, and is proud of all you do.
Little girl, I am speaking of your mother.
I hope you listen, for what I say to you is true.

Well, I hope that I'll be married to your mother for going on fifty years.
I'll be older, grayer, thinking back on summers
when you were young and all of us were near.
For you'll be grown and will have moved away, and might have children too
and when they give you troubles, you'll just say, "What would my mother do?"
Little girl, I am married to your mother,
and I love her as much as I love you.
