  1. Beautiful Here

From the recording DEMO RECORDINGS

A kind of COVID-19 song Eric wrote while on vacation. This one is not autobiographical.

Lyrics

I remember the day when I drove away
From my place down in the cities.
I kept driving south, 'til I came to a town
Where the sky is big and pretty.

When I got to this town, figured I'd settle down--
At least it'd be worth trying.
I'd get a new job, stay away from the mob,
the tear gas and the lying.

Stay safe, they said,
You could end up dead.
It's beautiful here, beautiful here.
You don't want to go.
This is all we know.
It's beautiful here in this world.

As I walk around in my new home town
I feel I have God's favor
All the people I meet keep their distance from me
Out of love for their new neighbor.

But I heard talk of a wife who took her own life,
She couldn't take being isolated.
With all the slogans we say, at the end of the day
Things are much more complicated.

Stay safe, they said,
You could end up dead.
It's beautiful here, beautiful here.
You don't want to go.
This is all we know.
It's beautiful here in this world.

I remember my mom would sing me a song
When I was sick or I was crying.
With a pat on my head she'd tuck me in bed
And we'd say that prayer about dying.

I think of that song, the words that were strong,
At least to my recollection.
There seems to be more for those who die in the Lord,
New life and resurrection.

Stay safe, they said,
You could end up dead.
It's beautiful here, beautiful here.
You don't want to go.
This is all we know.
It's beautiful here in this world.
Beautiful here in this world.
